Project Management Titles: Common Roles and Salaries

In today’s dynamic job market, for project management, it’s important that you do not limit yourself and explore all project manager roles.

Project management offers a vast number of titles tied to a wide range of responsibilities. 

Things to consider when looking for project management roles are education, years of experience, and what your ultimate career goals are.

Once these factors have been considered, you’ll have an idea of what title and role would best fit your needs. 

As a business owner, it’s also a good idea to explore the different roles and responsibilities to help with filling gaps in operations.

Below are a few of the most common project manager titles:

Project Manager

Project Manager is the most common title. The role of a project manager is to manage the successful delivery of the project. They manage the project from initiation to closeout and are responsible for project planning and execution. Project managers should have excellent communication skills, problem solving skills and should be extremely resourceful. The average national salary for a project manager is around $94,951

Consider experience, industry and business function when negotiating salaries. Below are other job titles that hold similar responsibilities as a project manager.

  • Technical Project Manager - usually has an IT or similar technical background with the ability to manage technical projects and teams. 

  • Implementation Manager - usually manages the implementation and adoption of a technical system or solution across the organization.

  • Project Lead - usually carries many of the responsibilities of project management with less specific project management training. 

  • Junior Project Manager - usually manages projects under a more senior project manager.

  • Assistant Project Manager - usually works alongside a project manager to keep the team motivated and to carry out the planning and execution of the project.

Program Manager

A program manager’s role is to oversee the planning and operations of a program; which could contain many projects and products. The national average salary of a program manager is $139,643.

Portfolio Manager

Similar to the program manager, a portfolio manager’s role is to oversee the planning and operations of a portfolio that is aligned to specific business objectives. The national average salary of a portfolio manager is $173,807.

Project Coordinator

The role of a project coordinator is to keep the documentation of the project extremely organized and well maintained.

They keep track of the project schedule and budget and communicate frequently with the project team to ensure everything is on track. The avenge national salary of the project coordinator is $53,985.

A Program Coordinator’s role is similar except they coordinate  multiple programs and projects. The average national salary is $59.833.

Project Administrator

The role of a project administrator is to help with document tracking, maintenance and any administrative project support required.

They’re under the direct supervision of the project manager with a national average salary of $53,259.
