RASCI Matrix Meaning

At its core, the RASCI matrix is a tool that defines the roles and responsibilities for a project team. The 5 key roles are Responsible (R), Accountable (A), Consulted (C), Supporting (S), Informed (I), Understanding the meaning behind each role is crucial to effectively manage your team and make the best decisions.

  • Responsible - signifies team members who are directly responsible for completing tasks.

  • Accountable - assigned to those who can approve or answer for the outcome of a task.

  • Supportive - this team member provides resources or assistance for a task.

  • Consulted - signifies an individual who can offer expertise and input for a task.

  • Informed - this individual is kept up to date with the progress of the task.

Once you grasp the nuances of the different responsibilities, clear lines of communication can be established and drive the project success.

RASCI Matrix Template

Creating a RASCI matrix template is actually quite simple and can be set up in a few different ways. One of the ways to set it up is to add the project roles across the x-axis and the tasks down the y-axis, and in each intersection, mark either R,A,S,C or I.

This provides a visual representation of who is responsible for what and keeps everyone accountable. Within the Women of Project Management membership, you have access to a collection of templates via “The Vault'' including a RASCI matrix template.

Utilizing the RASCI matrix for effective team management.

Clear roles, defined responsibilities and accountability right in your face- that’s the power of the RASCI matrix. Having this template set up at the start of your project and keeping it up to date will enable seamless communication with your team.

It’s a great template to reference as you’re setting up your communication plan and you’ll easily be able to set up workflows and automations based on your matrix.

Having a RASCI matrix will definitely help to resolve conflict more effectively as it takes the guesswork out of who is supposed to do what and who should be contacted for different aspects of the project.
